1. Obstructive Sleep Apnea: This is the most common type. It most often occurs in people who are overweight when soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep and partially or completely blocks the airway.
2. Central Sleep Apnea: This is far less common, affecting less than 5% of patients. It occurs when the brain does not send the proper signals to control breathing.
3. Mixed Sleep Apnea: This occurs when patients have components of both obstructive and central sleep apnea.
