These Foods Might Be Keeping You Up At Night!

Foods with high acidity (like oranges) can cause heartburn which can result in discomfort at night. We asked Dr. Claire Kenneally, Board Certified Sleep Specialist at Chicago Sleep Center a division of ChicagoENT, to help shed some light on how food can play a burglarizing role in our sleep.

“Many foods on this list are super healthy and nutritious for you but it’s not recommended to eat them before bedtime because these foods can interfere with your sleep,” says Dr. Kenneally.

Foods to Avoid Before Bedtime and Why?

Caffeine Drinks-drinks like coffee and certain teas can keep your mind overactive.

Dark Chocolate-while this tasty treat is rich in antioxidants, it also contains caffeine and theobromine, which causes the heart rate to increase and contributes to sleepless nights.

High Protein Foods-keeps your digestive system working hard rather than shutting down for sleep.

Foods Containing Water-like celery and watermelon can cause you to visit the bathroom too many times at night rather than visiting your dreams.

Spicy Foods-we all love a big bowl of chili but eating spicy foods too close to bedtime can cause heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion. Heartburn can also be made worse when lying down.

Sugary Foods-now we all know that having a candy is not good for you but having it before bedtime can spike your insulin levels, making it difficult to sleep.

Alcohol-disrupts sleep and stops you from entering REM-a deeper state of sleep.

If you are feeling hungry before bedtime and need a snack, Dr. Kenneally recommends having a healthy blend of protein, fat and carbohydrates. “Try a banana with some peanut butter,” said Dr. Kenneally.
