Are You Allergic to Penicillin?

Penicillin allergy is one the most commonly reported drug allergy.  However, many times it is over diagnosed.  As many as 10% of patients report having a penicillin allergy but only 90% of them in fact do not have a true allergy to this medication.  A penicillin allergy can diminish as a person becomes older.  The most common story we hear is that patients were told by their parents they had a reaction to this antibiotic as a young child.  Since then, they have been avoiding it.

Not knowing if you are truly allergic to penicillin often leads to the use of alternative antibiotics. Given the rise in resistance of microbes to many antibiotics, finding a suitable alternative agent may become more toxic and expensive.  It is therefore important to be evaluated by an allergist to determine if you truly have a penicillin allergy.
